To respond to my Muslim friend's post above, let me just say that I think he raises some very valid points. The U.S. is something of a "Johnny come lately" to this whole pro-democracy party. We can play "holier than thou" to our neighbors around the world, but it really wasn't that long ago that Americans of separate races were assigned to separate facilities. People who questioned the status quo would be visited by terrorists in the dark of night and their homes set on fire. (Sound familiar?) It wasn't that long ago that black Americans weren't allowed in the armed forces, and American women weren't allowed to vote. Not that long before that, we had legalized human slavery and we were intentionally infecting Native Americans with smallpox.
I don't say this because I think we're obligated to hang our heads in shame forever. I bring it up for two reasons: 1. to remind us that we shouldn't look down our noses too hard at those in the world who don't share our modern ideals of equality and 2. to remind us how far a culture can come in just a few generations.
